Choosing The Right Cattleya Orchids For Your Home

Buying an orchid for the home should be a pleasurable experience. If you are a first-time orchid buyer, its best to chose easy to grow orchid varieties. Take the extra time to select the orchid plant that will suit your lifestyle. Ensure that whichever orchid you chose it should be healthy, and you should make sure you have the right information as it relates to the proper care for your cattleya orchids.

While it is true that some flowers can be fussy and difficult to grow successfully, Phal Flowers are easy for even the beginning indoor gardener to handle. These flowers can grow quite large and can be two feet in both height and breadth. The flower sprays produced to make a spectacular display that can last for months as long as the flowers remain unfertilized and undamaged. This kind of orchid has no pseudobulb.

There are only two basic 'types' of orchid, terrestrial and epiphytes. Terrestrial flowers grow in the ground while epiphytes grow on trees. Both are popular and are chosen less by types and more by how easy they are to grow, their availability or their cost. Rare flowers can fetch enormous sums for the obsessed collector.

They should not be kept sitting in water, however, and you should take care to keep water off the leaves as this can cause them to rot. Many experienced growers repot their Moth Flowers every year, right at the beginning of the growth cycle at the end of winter, rather than waiting until the orchid is potbound.

If you live in the tropics or the average temperature in your home is above 22 degrees centigrade, it may be best to choose an orchid from the warm-growing group. Flowers can be placed on a window sill provided that it's not affected by direct sunlight, which will cause burning. It's always preferable to place plants at a location on the window sill facing east or west.

Phalaenopsis Orchid (Moth Orchid)- The Phalaenopsis orchid is another very popular species of orchid with its beautiful purple flowers and its frequency of blooming throughout the year. It is also known as the Moth orchid because its leaves can be likened to a moth's wings in flight.

Most homes will probably have several different types of environments to grow flowers. Choose the right orchid that will thrive in the location you want to keep your orchid. If you receive the orchid as a gift, select the most suitable location in your home for it to grow.

Feeding And Watering Your Orchid- Thoroughly soak your orchid once a week and let it dry completely before watering it again. If your home is especially dry, you may need to water every 5 or 6 days if the orchids soil is still damp you may want to wait 8 or so days until the soil is dry. Fertilize your moth orchid once a week with miracle grows using the fertilizer at half strength.
