Facts About Manual Retractable Awnings

By Amy Jackson

Awnings are installation that people install on their property to provide protection against the sun and rain. These products also offer safety against strong winds and they protect the interior of the house. For instance, the sun that is blocked by awning would otherwise cause a lot of damage to furniture and other surfaces inside the house. Water from the rain is also prevented from entering houses by these installations. Various kind of awnings have been developed today and manual retractable awnings are among them.

The roof and a framework make up the awnings. Aluminum or galvanized steel are some of the materials that are used to make the frame. Galvanization is done to promote durability and to prevent steel from rusting. Aluminum is not galvanized since it naturally does not rust. Frames that are made from metal normally last a long time without being replaced and they are also very strong.

For the durability of the whole structure, maintenance should be done on a regular basis. It is wise to check the structural integrity and do maintenance on the awning at least once a year. For people living around the coastal region, the framework of their awnings should be checked at least two times in a year. Coastal regions are normally very humid and this causes the rusting process to occur faster.

A finish can be applied on the frames to protect them. The fabric of an awning can at times be discolored by weather elements. One should use a brush and dish soap to do away with the stains if they occur. One can use vinegar or bleach for stains that are more severe. Professional cleaners can be hired if stains formed on the surface of the fabric cannot be removed with tools and supplies found at home.

In many cases, a permit from the government is not needed for a person to install an awning. On the contrary, if the awning being installed is very large, obtaining a permit may be necessary before installation begins. This mostly happens in cities. In certain cases, associations of property owners may have rules whereby all homes in the neighborhood must have awnings installed.

In cases where homeowner associations demand that homeowners install awnings, they may regulate the size of the awnings as well as the color among other features. Because of these requirements, one I advised to always check with their city or homeowner association before having awnings installed. Failure to do this may attract a penalty in the form of fines. Also, one may be forced to bring down the awning after installation.

One of the major factors that cause people to install an awning is that they help to reduce the cost of cooling. How much savings in cooling one can get from using these products usually vary from one place to another. In some cases, one can save as much as 20 percent on their monthly power bills. The savings extend beyond monthly energy bills when people in an entire neighborhood install awnings in their homes.

During peak periods the savings experienced are more. During these times, less consumption is realized by utility companies. In turn, the public and utility companies are able to realize more savings. Thus, installing an awning is a good idea due to these savings.
