High-Efficiency Gas Furnace And Forced Air Zone Controls

By Michelle McDonald

When a new object does not perform to its rated efficiency, customers rarely think it is because it was improperly installed; they blame it on factory faults or damage during delivery. High-efficiency gas furnace installation, if done correctly, reduces home energy consumptions and forced air zone controls save money. The necessary procedures and steps of properly installing a furnace in an existing house are given below.

For a successful installation, a process consisting of 4 steps should be followed. The first step of the process is called the pre-Changeout phase; this is performed before the purchase of the furnace and other sub-elements. A contractor responsible for the installation project has to check the old system and take necessary measurements and give the homeowner a quote of how much the project is going to cost. The contractor can t give a quote before assessing the old system, if they do then they might overcharge or undercharge the homeowner.

Pre-Changeout is a form of transitioning stage between the old and the new furnace system. The contractor will check how the old one was working, were improvements are needed and calculate how much energy output the new one should release, this is normally done during heat load calculations. Furthermore, the contractor will take measurements of the old system s ductwork, the new system has to have the exact measurements in order to be a perfect fit, otherwise, there may be air leakages.

The second step is called the installation phase. The newly bought parts and furnace are now ready to get installed. The furnace s manufacturer normally gives installation instructions, they are unique to every furnace. The contractor should follow those instructions during the process to avoid making mistakes. The rules in the Health and Safety Regulations Act should also be followed during the process.

Air leakage should be avoided where old and new ductwork meets, aluminium tape can be used to connect and seal them together. Turbulent flow of air is undesirable in the furnace, turning vines and tapering methods may be used to avoid this unwanted occurrence. One more thing on installation, the furnace produces acidic condensate during its operation which causes corrosion; that is why it is imperative to level it well during installation.

A gas fitter should then come to perform commissioning tests to check whether the furnace works according to the manufacturer s specifications. This is called the commissioning phase and the typical tests conducted are a static pressure, temperature rise, firing rate and wiring tests and record the results in a checklist.

The final stage is the education and maintenance phase. Here the contractor should educate the homeowner about using the furnace and provide maintenance information.

That is how a furnace retrofit is good to be done.
