Using mole traps to get rid of moles is probably the most common and dependable way of ridding your lawn of them. There are several different types of these traps and all of them can be found at your local hardware store.
For your mole traps to be effective they have to be installed to kill the animal when it is under the ground. So usually the most common thing to do is to set it up for when they might be trying to open up their tunnels again, especially the ones they use the most. When they are working on their tunnels with a trap in the area the dirt pushes against the trap triggers and then the animal is usually killed.
Before setting a trap it is important that you find out which of the tunnels are permanent. These are the ones they use most often. There are both temporary and permanent ones so it is important that you know the difference between the two.
To be able to figure this out look for areas that seem to always be reopened and that they seem to follow a straight line for some distance or if they also seem to be connected to two mounds often used as their feeding area.
The permanent tunnels will also often follow fence lines, sidewalks and other man made borders. If they happen to seem to be deep then find a stick or a thin rod of metal to poke between mounds or next to a relatively fresh mound. Another thing you can try is to stomp down on the mounds with your feet and then check the next day to see if the soil has been disturbed.
Various mole traps are available for sale and the two most often used would be the harpoon and the scissor jaw. Both can be purchased at most stores that sell gardening and landscaping supplies.
The scissor jaw types are most effective when you place them in the main underground tunnel. This usually means you need to put them about 8 to 12 inches below the top of the ground. This is a good out of sight trap and lets you dig right into an active tunnel right in the path of the moles.
The harpoon variety sometimes called the spear trap is set when the tunnel is crushed with a persons hands or feet and then putting the trap right above the area that was destroyed. This will make the mole come to try and reopen their tunnel and the dirt will trigger the trap to spring into action.
A lot of people make one common mistake when it comes to mole traps and that is they never buy enough of them. You need to realize that for each tunnel you discover, you will need an individual trap for it.
