Door Hinge - One Of The Best Inventions Most People Don't Appreciate

By Daisy Lin Lam

Every morning you probably open and close at least five doors before you leave to go to work. You close the bathroom door to jump in the shower. You must also open the cabinet that contains your toothpaste and toothbrush. You quickly eat your cereal before reaching for the front door as you leave the house. A small yet significant part that keeps these doors - and hence your life - functional is a door hinge. And how would it feel like without these important door parts? Try to imagine yourself employing climbing tricks like entering and leaving the house via a small hole at the top of your roof simply because you are not able to use your entrance door every day.

Door hinges, with their surprising strength, have simplified life for us. They can generally do eight to ten times the work they are assigned. Thanks to the door hinges, you are able to have full control of the door. Today, there is a vast variety of door hinges available at one's disposal and the best way to get access to this plethora of choices is to shop online. Online shopping offers the ideal combination of convenience and variety, as you don't have to go looking from store to store in search of a perfect set of door hinges to complete the look of your home. You can do everything at home comfortably by browsing the various websites before comparing and buying the hinge.

Door hinges come in different types including material and style. The butt hinge is one of the most common types. It has two flaps that have screw holes in it, attached by a rod or pin. All it takes to bring down the door is simply to remove the rods or pins. You can choose to add finials or balls to the pins for a decorative touch.

Garage doors, on the other hand, are normally attached using T-hinges. It has a letter T shape and the door frame is usually attached to the horizontal part while the vertical part is connected to the door. Even with the T-hinge, you have the option of choosing between plain and ornamental designs. If your door is a folding door, then a Soss hinge is the hinge to use. Named after its inventor, this type of door hinge is pushed back to the edges of the door so it is not visible when the door is folded. However, it must be correctly installed or you will not be able to fold your doors propertly.

As for cabinet doors, the hinge you install depends on the specific door type. Generally, there are three main types of doors; overlay, flush and lipped. Lipped doors have lip cuts around them and work perfectly well with most types of door hinges.

A flush door rests within the frame and works well with butterfly hinges. Butterfly hinges work in the same way as a butt hinge, with the only difference being that it hung from outside and comes in ornamental designs that range from art deco to colonial.

Overlay doors are installed with pivot hinges. One hinge is specially mounted on top while the other is fitted on the bottom part, each having a bent portion over before being fitted the on the door's frame to conceal the hinge. The spring hinge is arguably the most popular type of door hinge. The spring fitted inside this door hinge causes the door to shut behind you automatically.

The modest door hinge is one of the many devices whose existence you don't even acknowledge but whose absence can bring your life to a partial halt.
