Measures That Can Create Affordable Housing For Young Adults

By Anna Fox

Having a shelter is one of the basic needs that several people miss due to financial constraints and other reasons. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the government, together with close stakeholders in this industry to ensure that cost-effective houses are made available to everyone. However, due to the complexity of issues surrounding the process of providing public housing, not much has been achieved. Therefore, below is a discussion of various options that can facilitate the provision of affordable housing for young adults.

Come up with cost-effective house designs. The designer has to construct buildings that match the requirements or the tenants' needs. This will also include considering the number of occupants of such houses. For example, most young people live alone or have small families. Constructing houses with smaller or fewer rooms will be a more cost-effective option.

Adopt sustainable strategies. This will involve the use of locally available construction materials and hiring of local constructors and other workers. Benefits resulting from this is that additional transportation costs of building materials will not be necessary. This will boost the economic status of the local population significantly. Employing these strategies ensures that the building process is economical and consequentially, the resultant rental expenses are expected to be relatively low.

Consider establishing an environment of social diversity. Residentials holding people with various income levels can generate an efficient economic diversity region. This will create work opportunities that can boost the earnings of young adults. This way, establishing low-cost homes can be achieved without significant challenges. Cases of isolation of places due to their economic status are minimized too.

Additionally, favorable transition systems should be enacted in such places. This is where individuals can shift from homelessness to owning or renting a home more comfortably without being discriminated due to their economic status. Growing families should also be ensured of their ability to meet shelter requirements. For example, they can be given rent-to-own options and the freedom to extend their homes to accommodate more people as the family grows.

Companies should be encouraged to provide housing allowance for their junior employees. This is particularly beneficial to youths who are yet to establish their financial statuses. Most companies only provide housing for senior employees, leaving the junior ones struggling to survive. Hence, if they can be given allowances, more people will have a chance to attain financial stability and later find suitable homes.

Houses can also be constructed with some shared facilities. Building such homes can significantly reduce rental expenses when users share certain standard utilities. However, each one of them still gets to enjoy the advantage of his or her privacy. This can reduce the cost of construction and maintenance, and sequentially, the rent.

The government, on the other hand, should establish more publicly run residential services. This is where low-income and jobless people will be given a priority in securing homes. This does not mean that the houses should be free, but that they should be substantially subsidized. The cost or acquiring or renting a home may also be based on a person's financial ability, among other essential considerations. This will ensure that many low-income people can still afford houses.
