Stamped Concrete Incorporates Blend Of Artistic Techniques

By Troy Wilkerson

There are a number of special techniques that are used on a driveway or other project. Stamped concrete is one of the most popular. The homeowner selects from a number of colors and patterns. The contractor who offers this finish is a skilled professional. The results can be as fancy as the homeowner wishes, with more than one pattern and color included in a single project.

One method of adding color is to blend it into the mix of cement and additives when preparing the mixture for a pour. Another method is done by shaking a hardener with color on the surface after the pour. The results will vary depending on the method used. A single pour for one project can be finished in two or three different colors.

A skilled contractor can execute detailing by hand that results in an intricate overall design. Chemical staining, borders and sawcut designs can be implemented. The stamping process may include a wide array of finishes.

After the mixture is poured to the prepared area, molds create the patterns when they are pressed into the surface before it can dry. The contractor times it carefully to get the optimal results. A crew must be available to perform this procedure. The size of that crew is dependent on the number of square feet the project encompasses.

There are several ways to add color along with stamping. The provider can add it to the mix prior to the pour, or it may be shaken on in powder or liquid form after the pour. Different colors can be shaken on to different areas of the driveway for a fancy design.

A homeowner is given the opportunity to consider an estimate prior to signing a contract. It is a good idea to get two or three estimates from different contractors. This will allow the homeowner time to decide if the added beauty of stamped concrete will fit within his or her budget.
