Rare Holidays Deserve No Less Than Flowers

By Lizbeth Nathaniel

We always think about sending flowers to someone on their birthday and Mom always receives a bouquet for Mother's Day. In addition, we also typically give flowers for Valentine's Day, anniversaries and the arrival of a new baby. However, there are plenty of other fun occasions when giving flowers is both appropriate and a fun way to share a little love.

One fun occasion invented by the founder of Hallmark card company is intended to give tribute to friendship. And quite suitably it has been known as Friendship Day or International Friendship Day celebrated every first weekend of august. Such an occasion is fit to remember those who has been good friends and has been a celebration since 1919.

In addition to Father's Day and Mother's Day, there is a special day set aside just for our grandparents. The first Sunday following Labor Day is always Grandparents' Day and certainly your grandmother or grandfather would enjoy a beautiful bouquet or perhaps a live plant. Don't just send flowers, though, be sure to call them and tell them that you love them and if they live close by, also consider fixing them a nice dinner or treating them to dinner at a restaurant.

Although not many may know of this, one unique American holiday is Sweetest Day. A celebration listed exclusively in the United States, the third Saturday of October is set aside for this. In 1921, the first Sweetest Day was celebrated with the intent of remembering the poor, sick, orphans and the elderly while also thanking those who have been extra kind to you. In line with this, sending flowers to honor the ones who have been truly caring and loving for you is observed and some even send large arrangements to retirement or nursing homes to bring cheer. You also can make donations to food banks or shelters for the homeless - or spend extra time in such places to help if you do have the time and energy to do so.

If you know someone who loves Halloween, this is a great occasion to send someone a special, spooky flower arrangement. There are online flower shops that create Halloween bouquets featuring Halloween colors and then place the arrangement in a Jack-o-Lantern or a pumpkin. Sometimes special decorations are added such as spiders, a witch's hat or perhaps a few bats.

How about sending something special for a friend who has been extra devout on ensuring that the environment is well protected come the Earth Day or Arbor Day celebration? You could choose a basket from a Dana Point florist with assorted live plants as a fitting gift for him or her because they can plant these gifts and enjoy them for the years to come.
