Ancient peoples placed on record by way of cave paintings and drawings, the taming of wild animals to serve mans purpose. These were of the gentle type that easily gave in to be controlled by humans. Most were harnessed to do work in the fields, to drag carts, and to carry heavy burdens. An example is an ox which did most of the field plowing and other tasks.

One major impact that resulted from the taming of wild creatures is the added resource for food. The domestication of meat and milk producing animals gave rise to food availability. Goats, sheep, and cows are often mentioned in old texts, both cultural and religious. The impact this has made on the human population cannot be overestimated as can be seen by the vigorous livestock industry.

There are many tales about the first encounter between man and dog. Oral tradition has that a severely wounded dog could not keep up with its pack. Left alone to fend for itself, it was able to make its way into a mans home. Very much alive but unable to hunt for food, it allowed itself to be fed by the man of the house who took care of it. Since that time the affinity between man and this canine character has been unbreakable.

The origins of the breed. The golden retriever is one of the most popular breeds. In earlier times it was known as Saint Johns dog. The popular name Labrador was coined in the British Isles in the late nineteenth century. It was also around this time that the first ochre colored one was born and recorded.

These dogs are of medium size and build. However, they are so well gifted with speed, sight, and smell. These characteristics have made them favorite among hunting sportsmen. The creature is highly intelligent and can easily follow the commands of its master. They are also favored by police forces and the military as they are very keen on sniffing out contraband materials.

These type of dog is best trained while on a leash at a tender age. This is recommended because of the animals seemingly endless activity. It is obsessed with fetching items that are hurled, even including trash. The even tempered animal is also fond of other animals as well as children which they like to romp with. This creature is fun to have as it can easily be taught to do tricks.

Caring for this particular creature is just like caring for a human family member. It eats, sleeps along with its owners. A variety of dog food is available in the market. These are manufactured to tailor fit its dietary needs. Its activity usually corresponds with that of man. It is active and at daytime and rests during the night. It retains its heightened senses even when asleep.

Humans do have an affinity with dogs. They have become part of human life and activity. Some may cost much to acquire. Caring for it is like looking after a member of the family. They are known to even grieve at the loss of a family member, taking no food for many days.
