Don't Have A Green Thumb? Get One With These Simple Gardening Tips!

By Chris Dixon

Gardening means more than decorating a space outdoors. It isn't only a pastime for hobbyists with a green thumb. It is an activity which offers the gardener opportunities for achieving serenity and gaining a greater appreciation of life. Especially if you are good at it, its effects are profound.

Consider planting slug-proof perennials. Snails and slugs can destroy plants in just one night. These pests gravitate to young perennials with smooth, tender, thin leaves. Perennials that have tough or hairy leaves are often times unappetizing to snails and slugs. Examples of these include euphorbia, hellebourus and achillea. Others you may want to consider are campanula and heuchera.

Fill your garden with bulbs if you want to enjoy beautiful flowers through the spring and into summer. These are hearty choices, choices that will reward you for years despite the little effort that is involved in their care. If you choose your plants carefully, you could have flowers in blossom from the first weeks of spring to the end of the summer.

Cooling weather of early fall signals the opportune time to plant seasonal edibles. Clay pots are boring, so replace those ordinary lettuce and kale pots with pumpkins. Cut an opening in the pumpkin and scoop the insides out. Then spray the edges and empty inside of the pumpkin with Wilt-Pruf so the pumpkin doesn't rot. Once you've done this, you can plant.

Do you enjoy fresh mint leaves though hate how they grow so fast and take over your entire garden? You can control the growth of the mint leaves by growing them in a large container rather than in your garden. Then, you can plant the container into the ground. However, the container walls will keep the roots held, and prevent the plant from consuming too much of your garden space.

When the fall season approaches, you must prepare to plant your favorite fall veggies and other edibles. Try using a pumpkin as a natural plant pot. You can plant fall vegetables such as lettuce in an empty pumpkin shell. Scoop the insides out of the pumpkin, and don't forget to spray the inside with Wilt-Pruf. This will prevent your pumpkin from rotting. Once you've done this, you can plant.

Maximize your time by keeping your tools close. Large pockets or a sturdy bucket can be used to store tools. Keep gloves, small pruning shears, a trowel and any other tools handy in order to increase the quickness of the work that goes into your garden.

Fertilizer in the garden is a must. If you decide to use manure, which is great for your plants, choose a pathogen free commercial product. You have many different choices for fertilizer; choose whichever is best-suited to your plants but definitely use one.

The more organic gardening tips you are able to pick up, the easier horticulture will eventually become for you. This article is just the tip of the ice-berg when it comes to organic gardening information.
