La Mesa Home Security Tips: DIY

By Mark Mahaffey

Many people are afraid of burglaries in their homes, and you may be one of them! But take heart. 90% of burglaries are preventable, and this is good news for you, because this means you can do a lot to protect yourself.

The key is in knowing what to do to prevent robberies. To begin with, look at the outside of your house. What is the lighting like? Are the areas around the doors and windows well lit or are they dark? Dark areas mean that burglars can hide easily. Consider putting in some security lighting.

Next take a good look at your landscaping. Do you have hedges or decorative items up near your house? If so, a crook could hide there or even use it to climb up and enter through a window on the upper stories of your home.

You may not think of your door frames much, but they play a crucial role in how efficient your La Mesa home security is. You see, no matter how strong your locks and dead bolts are, if your door frames are weak a crook could just kick in the door frame and by pass the lock all together! Make sure your door frames are strong, sturdy and not beginning to rot.

One of the best ways to scare off a crook who is trying to break into your home is to make sure he makes a lot of noise. Putting alarm sensors on all your doors and windows will increase the chances that he will trip these alarms and make a loud noise. This will probably scare him off.

If you do not have a dog, consider getting one. A barking dog is one of the best ways to deter criminals from breaking into your house. Not only do they make noise and thereby sound an alarm, but the crook may also leave because he is scared he will be bitten!
