Why Obedience Training Is Essential

By Garrett McMahan

Studies show that people who own a dog tend to suffer from less depression, have better heart health and might live a bit longer than those with no pets. Of course, a dog is also a great companion that brings plenty of joy to your life, but along with this joy comes some responsibility, and obedience training is one important part of owning a dog.

There are millions of pets in shelters across the United States, and often the reason why these animals end up in the shelter is because they displayed negative behavior. The saddest part about this fact is that most behavior problems can be eliminated fairly easily with a little patience and training. One big reason to train your dog is to simply stop behavior problems that will keep you from truly enjoying your pet.

Proper training for obedience includes teaching your dog simple skills such as to stay and sit and lie down on command. Walking your dog also is a lot more pleasant once they have been trained how to walk properly while leashed. You can train your dog to stay quiet or to keep away from furniture and to keep them from jumping on all of your houseguests. These are just a few issues that can be addressed during training.

Another big reason why you need to focus on obedience training is to ensure that your dog is safe. Dogs that dash away from you or run out the front door or who don't obey basic commands can put themselves in a variety of dangerous situations. Obedience training can ensure that your dog does what he is supposed to do when he is supposed to do it, and it can stop dogs from running away or darting out into a busy street or after another animal.

In addition to making life safer and easier, you also bond closer together during training. Spending all those hours learning new skills is time you spend together really getting to know each other, and this is great fun for your dog, who really just wants to spend time with his or her special person. You will be amazed at how fast your dog will learn if you are consistent about training, as well as patient and full of praise for a job well done. A truly obedient dog is welcome at many places where you cannot take an untrained dog, so this training also allows you to take your furry friend just about anywhere you go.

There are many training programs out there to consider, but a DVD dog training program is a great idea because you can train on a schedule that is convenient to you. The Dog's Way is a well-designed dog training program that addresses a host of basic skills that every dog needs to learn in 12 easy-to-follow lessons. In addition to the DVD lessons, there is a helpful workbook and special reminder cards that are great for on-the-go training. So no matter where you are, you can be consistent with training. In addition, those who purchase the DVDs have access to a student-only website with additional tips and techniques.
