Making Your Tennis Court Maintenance Better

By Gwen Lowe

Contrary to the past decades, construction of tennis courts is done with materials that will enhance their durability for a longer service. However, tennis court maintenance does not mean that they are susceptible to worn out as they also need to be maintained every now and then just to ensure that they are in good condition.

Firstly, courts need to be regularly cleaned to get rid of molds and mildew that usually accumulate around corners and shaded areas of the playing ground. Indoor courts need to be regularly vacuumed. Cleaning with water and detergents needs to happen once a year. The later needs soft bristled scrubbing materials. Doing this helps keep fungus and molds that come from decomposing food substances at bay.

Still water should also be drained regularly to avert accumulation of dirt. If this water is not drained, the dirt it traps may stain the surface and trap debris. The combination of debris and dirt forms sandpaper-like surfaces which may be difficult for players to play on. Water in the birdbaths should also be drained frequently and foreign materials like leaves and pine needles picked up regularly. If left on the ground, they may serve as breeding grounds fungus, leave alone staining the court.

The process of scrubbing requires soft brushes which do not damage the ground. If hard bristles are used, the surface is likely to wear out and tear at a faster rate than when soft ones are used due to the aggressive scrubbing. In case pressure washers are used, the pressure ought to be set at 70 p. S. I.

As it is always said, prevention is better than cure and therefore, taking care of these courts seems a better choice than having to repair them for damages that might have been prevented. Some of the preventive measures that need to be taken into account include; caution bikers and skaters from using the court for practicing and preventing people from using non marking shoes. Moreover, people watching matches should avoid pulling their seat so as not to scratch the surface.

The drainage system is supposed be constructed in a manner that makes it easier to drive away water from the surface of the yard and also prevent water from the sides of these courts from getting on to the surface of the ground. Pipes and other water channels ought to be cleared of all materials that may block them.

Keeping grass and other vegetation around the yard at a certain level is important as it is part of the tidiness. For that reason, frequent trimming should be in order also because it builds the image of the courts in terms of its design. In addition, doing this prevent blowing of dirt on the ground by wind while playing which might be distracting.

Those who water the surface should be advised not to over-water since doing so may lead to accumulating water at the base of the surface. Heating up makes this water to evaporate and form blisters. Lastly, there should be an annual court inspection. Doing this reveals areas within the court that need repairs and sometimes resurfacing.
