Get Better Shower Stream Pressure

By John Lewis

An issue that plagues many homes is low water pressure in the shower. This may cause stress for the home's occupant and result in longer bath times. Most may not understand why the shower stream has decreased. If you are suffering from a slack stream the following may help.

Water trickling out of the shower head can be caused by various things. You may want to phone your local water works. They have people who can come out and troubleshoot the issue and offer solutions. The most important step when experiencing low flow is to find out the reason for the restriction. The issue could be in any of the following areas.

The shower head itself- If the main tap works appropriately, then the cause for the low pressure may be in the shower head. There are multiple reasons why this happens. If the head is new, the membrane which controls the flow may be too small. If the shower head is old, then there may be build up which is causing blockages.

The fix- In order to fix a small membrane which is impairing the stream's size, you will need to take apart the shower head and look inside to view the membrane. Use an instrument to make the hole in this membrane larger to allow proper output. If it is old, then you would simply need to clean it to remove the build up which is blocking the holes and impairing the stream. This can be done by soaking in a vinegar solution. Once you clean or widen the hole of the washer proper water pressure should be achieved.

The Pipes- Low pressure can also be a result of old pipes or incorrect pipe size. Over time, steel pipes can galvanize over time. When this happens, deposits can build up inside the pipes and result in low pressure. If the pipes are new, then the wrong size pipes may have been installed. This would result in water flow being restricted too much and reduce output.

To remedy this the pipes would need to be replaced. If you have steel pipes you should upgrade to copper or plastic. Once this is completed, you should notice an increase in the water flow. If the pipes are incorrectly sized, then you would need to pay a professional to replace them with the right sizes. You should shop around to find a contractor who would be able to remedy this issue in the shortest amount of time as installation of pipes can be a lengthy process.

If neither of the above turns out to be the issue, then you should check your current setup. Most homes have a valve on the supply line, this is used to control the water pressure inside the house. The valve may need adjusting. To adjust this valve, you'd loosen the lock nut, turn the adjustment screw. You would need to turn it clockwise to increase and counter clockwise to decrease pressure. Once proper stream is achieved, re-tighten the nut.

Having good water pressure results in a more enjoyable shower. Only perform the above if you are capable of doing so. It is recommended that you hire a professional plumber or handyman. You can get recommendations from friends and family of plumbers who do good work and are reliable. It is important to locate someone you trust to do a good job and who will work with you on costs.
