Ornamental Grasses And Perennials Groundcovers For Every Yard

By George Stevens

So many people are looking for exciting new colors and flowers that they can add to their garden or yard, but it can be hard to find the right plants for the job. Liriope is just one of the many popular ornamental grasses and perennials groundcovers that are out there. This particular genus of low-growing plant comes out of South and Southeast Asia, and beautiful flowers bloom on it every year, which is the reason why so many people are now choosing this particular genus.

The name of the plant liriope actually comes out of Greek mythology. The nymph Liriope was the daughter of the Gods of the river, and she later gave birth to the famous God called Narcissus, who was so beautiful he fell in love with himself. It is the plant's beauty that gives it this name.

Liriope is one of those names that many people pronounce differently. While the pronunciation of the name is not as widely agreed-upon, there is a general consensus among plant lovers that this is a great addition to most any garden. There are also a great many different names for this plant, like monkey grass and spider grass, but one of the most common being lilyturf. This is in spite of the fact that it is not technically grass nor is it technically related to the lily flower.

As summer is turning into fall, the most beautiful flowers start to bloom on the liriope grass. These will usually be in some variety of blue and purple, but more and more color combinations are emerging all the time. This is thanks to the modern advancements in engineering the genes of these plants to produce the most vibrant colors, adding flash to any yard.

Going into a plant nursery is the very best way to find out more about which plants would be perfect for your lawn or garden. There is nothing like being able to see, smell, and touch the plant, and there are often numerous options to look through. Going online is also a great way to browse through all the options, but having an expert there with you is an invaluable benefit.

It can be hard to keep something alive in the yard when the weather is particularly harsh. It is good to know that these types of plants are hardy and able to handle these conditions. This eliminates the headache of having to pull up dead plants and buy new ones.

The appearance of these plants is what has led to many people referring to them as grass. Any botanical expert is quick to say that these types of plants are technically not a member of the grass family, although it is true that they have been given that name. Cat-tails, rushes, and sedges all look quite similar to grass but are technically not in the same genus.

The fall and winter can be a very hard time for a lot of plants, and that is why many people avoid trying out different species for their yard. There are some ornamentals that have a lifespan of one year, but most of them simply go dormant when it gets too cold. This is thanks to their ingenious method of storing energy before that time comes.
