Steps In Performing Steel Window Restoration

By Helen White

Around the twentieth century, steel windows were commonly used in combating fires in large cities. That is what made them very renowned and popular across the country where it was introduced. As years went by, they are used in constructing houses or residential buildings and apartments instead of using lumber. It was simply because of the scarcity of lumber that time.

Most of these historical windows deteriorated as time went on. The cracks were evident. Preservationists, as their name implies, want to preserve them. For instance, there are service providers of New York steel window restoration services that would provide the guide in every step of the process.

From their own openings, just remove them before bringing them to restoration shops. What a concept. This sounds good, huh. However, restoring steel, historical windows is not merely about removing and bringing. This is basically about scraping old things attaching it before putting something new in it.

This article enumerates the five things to remove and apply when doing such. By reading and understanding every word and every piece of advice written in this writeup, you will get to have a better understanding on the process and the reason why it should be done in a way which is labeled appropriate or shall they say, proper. Besides, you will also find these helpful if you are planning to get this thing done on a solo flight.

The first thing that you are going to do is to get rid of the old putty that is yellowish or grayish. Since it contains asbestos, removing it from a metallic window is much more complicated compared to removing it from a wooden type. Be sure to test it before doing an actual attempt at getting rid of it. Using cheap and lightweight wood chisel or hammer to remove this thing is much recommended. The clips holding the panes might hurt you, hence you got to be more careful.

Second, scrape the paint. Once you have successfully performed the first step, you can already do the scraping. Doing this properly is important to make your new, finished paint last longer. After that, smooth its surface using sandpaper and using damp clothes, wipe away the specks of dust. Make sure the panes are thoroughly cleaned before proceeding to the next step.

Third, perform the pretreatment of rusted areas. To do so, use a rust pretreatment and treatment product which you can buy in some stores near you. Since this step is a little bit complex, you have to pay close attention to every detail and do it carefully. Using a primer for quality metals, you can proceed to prime metallic surfaces. Let it dry.

Fourth is the glazing putty. You can apply this once the treatment for rusts has already dried. Rabbets and bevels are highly preferred in glazing new putty and finishing it, respectively. The corners must be kept clean before applying the final material.

Using paint with good quality, preferably oil based, is important in the final step. Lap the paint in at least six or more percent of the panes. Use your paint brush to cut a line and let the paint dry. Taking this advice will make these historical types of windows useful in the next years to come, with little or no maintenance.
