What You May Not Know About Tubal Reversal But Should

By Irene Duncan

Female sterilization is a birth control procedure that is meant to prevent pregnancy permanently. However, some women who undergo this procedure regret their decision later and wish to bear another child. In this case, they can opt for tubal reversal or tubal reanastomosis surgery. This surgical procedure is done to untie, reopen or reconnect the fallopian tubes of women who have undergone female sterilization.

Most women who opt for tubal reanastomosis are those who are younger than thirty years of age, those who were pressurized into undergoing the procedure and the women who underwent the procedure when they were facing marital problems. Female sterilization reversal is most effective in women who have not attained the age of 35 and their fallopian tubes suffered minimal damage during a sterilization procedure. If the fallopian tubes were blocked using rings or clamps, untying and reconnecting them is easier.

The rates of getting pregnant after tubal ligation reversal surgery range from 40 to 85 percent. These rates are determined by age, how skilled a surgeon is, the type of ligation surgery a patient underwent and if the fallopian tubes are still functioning well. The risk of having an ectopic pregnancy will be high after you undergo this procedure.

Before tubal ligation reversal surgery, healthcare providers recommend that patients complete a physical exam to determine if they can become pregnant after undergoing the procedure. This usually includes imaging and blood tests to find out if the ovaries are working normally. Women also required to undergo a hysterosalpinogram. This test checks the length and function of their remaining fallopian tubes. Their male partners are asked to undergo a semen analysis and sperm count test to rule out infertility problems.

During the procedure, you will be placed under anesthesia. Your surgeon will use a laparoscope with microscopic instruments attached to the end to view your fallopian tubes. This professional will then remove the clips or rings that were used to block them. He or she will then reconnect the ends of the tubes the uterus using small stitches.

Generally, it takes about two or three hours for surgeons to complete a tubal ligation reversal procedure. This procedure is more complicated than the sterilization procedure and a patient may e required to stay in the hospital overnight. Some women may be asked to stay in the facility for one to three days. About 3 months after the procedure, patients are required to undergo an X ray dye test, which lets doctors know if the procedure succeeded and whether the fallopian tubes are functioning as they should.

The main factor that determines how long you will take to recover fully is the techniques used to perform the procedure. If your surgeon used microsurgical techniques, you can be discharged from the hospital on the same day. You will be ready to go home about two to four hours after the surgery is complete. Your doctor will ask you to take pain relievers to manage discomfort.

Most patients resume normal activities within a period of two weeks. Most patients are able to conceive six months after undergoing tubal reanastomosis but others take as long as one year. Even though this procedure can be expensive and it is not covered by health insurance, most people find it to be affordable.
