Prevent Lawn Damage With Atlanta Mole Control And Removal

By Dave L. Weglin

In the wild, moles play an important role in aerating the soil and consuming harmful insects. These furry mammals are harmless to humans but when they move into residential areas, they can cause extensive damage to landscaping and irrigating equipment. Homeowners who need help controlling these pests can call on the services of Atlanta mole control and removal specialists.

Moles have short rear legs and tiny ears and eyes adapted to living underground. They are covered with velvety gray or black fur and grow to approximately six inches in length. They use the large claws on their powerful forelegs to dig tunnels through the dirt.

These animals dig burrows underground and rarely venture out. The most obvious signs of their presence are mounds of soil and the formation of surface tunnels, which serve as feeding runways. While gathering food, they can construct a one-foot long tunnel in approximately one minute.

Moles are most active when the soil is wet because they can easily find their prey near the surface of the soil. Their diet typically consists of ants, beetle grubs, and other small invertebrates but their favorite food is worms. They eat and sleep in two-hour cycles around the clock. This explains how they can do so much damage in just a short period.

Sometimes the extent of the damage leads property owners to believe they have more than one mole living under their lawn. In reality, these are solitary animals and rarely get together unless it is mating season. A single mole can build an extensive tunnel system with multiple burrows and branches that can cover a large parcel of land. Tunnels may be more than six inches below ground level but those nearer to the surface destroy plant roots and leave telltale furrows in the lawn.

These animals use their sense of sound to hunt for live prey. This makes them unlikely to consume poisoned bait. Most exterminators use lethal traps placed underground to control their population in residential areas. These professionals are familiar with the habits of these animals and know how to identify the best places to set their traps for maximum effectiveness.

Homeowners have to worry about more than their plants and lawn when they discover moles living on their property. These pests can destroy sprinkler heads and cause damage to water lines. This often leads to flooding, which requires costly repairs. Hiring a professional exterminator is the most effective way to control these destructive pests.
